Dogs in Summer – How to Keep Your Four-Legged Friend Safe in the Heat

For many, summer is the most wonderful time of year – long evenings, excursions, adventures. But for our dogs, heat can become a real danger. Unlike us, dogs cannot sweat. They regulate their body temperature almost exclusively by panting – and that has its limits.

When does heat become dangerous?

From about 25°C, it becomes strenuous for many dogs. Short-snouted breeds like bulldogs or pugs, older animals, and dogs with dark fur are particularly at risk. Signs of overheating include heavy panting, drooling, staggering, or apathy – in this case, act immediately and call the vet.

How to protect your dog in summer

Plan walks smartly

Go out early in the morning or late in the evening – when the asphalt is still cool. Test the temperature with the back of your hand: If you can't hold it on the ground for 5 seconds, it's too hot for paws.

Always have fresh water with you

No water on the go? That should never happen. A compact dog water bottle with an integrated drinking bowl makes it easy to water your dog at any time – whether in the park, on hikes, or in the car.

Create cool resting places

At home, your dog should always have a cool retreat. A self-cooling dog mat is activated by body pressure and noticeably lowers body temperature – without electricity or water. Ideal for hot summer days.

Protect and care for paws

Hot asphalt leaves marks – literally. After every walk, it's worth checking the paws. A nourishing paw balm regenerates stressed skin and forms a protective layer for the next outing.

The most important tip: Never leave them in the car

At an outside temperature of 25°C, it can get over 40°C in the car within 10 minutes. No open window, no shade – nothing makes it safe. Please never leave your dog alone in the car.
